Social Dance Levels

Like any hobby, social dancing has many levels of ability—and how far you go is entirely up to you! With time and practice, you can grow your dancing to any level you choose. As you move through the levels, you’ll develop stronger lead and follow skills, and over time, become more creative, adaptable, and confident in your interactions with other dancers.

BEGINNER

Beginners - Basic Social Dancing
2 dances per genre

The Beginner level introduces you to the basic patterns and timing of each dance. These fundamental steps are the easiest and most reliable tools for social dancing. On the floor, basics are repeated most often and serve as transitions between more complex patterns. Mastering them gives you the confidence to enjoy your first social dances with ease.

CRYSTAL

Foundations - Competent Social Dancing
2 Levels, 2 dances per genre

The Crystal level expands on your basics with more variations that help round out your dance foundations. It introduces commonly used steps that fit between basic patterns and give you more variety in your social dancing. You’ll also begin learning the fundamental techniques and concepts that contribute to confident, competent social dancing.

BRONZE

Lower intermediate - Great Social Dancing
3 Levels, 3 dances per genre

Building on your Crystal foundation, Bronze introduces additional step patterns that allow you to lead or follow a greater range of movements. The patterns are a little longer and involve more changes of place, different partner positions, and new holds. Bronze provides a good understanding of foot placement, timing, frame, weight shift, and how to apply these in lead and follow. Completing Bronze helps you become a good all-round social dancer.

SILVER

Upper Intermediate - Refined Social Dancing
3 levels, 4 dances per genre

Silver focuses on refining your dance technique. It builds on Bronze by improving your execution as you also explore more intricate patterns. This level places greater emphasis on body movement, styling, footwork, frame, and posture. Silver also develops a leader’s clarity and a follower’s awareness as a whole, helping you become a more refined social dancer.

GOLD

Lower Advanced - Versatile Social Dancing
3 levels, 5 dances per genre

The Gold level adds another level of intricacy and difficulty. You’ll explore trickier body movements and refine style through correct technique and posture. Gold develops a strong understanding of weight shift, frame, posture, connection, musicality, and presence, and how to apply these with any partner. Completing Gold makes you a well-refined and versatile dancer.

STAR

Upper Advanced -  Experienced Dancing
5 dances per genre

At the Star level, students have a strong awareness of how techniques vary across dance styles and genres. Star dancers typically have many years of social and showcase experience. This level focuses on advanced movements and techniques, and continues to explore musicality, spontaneity, and improvisation.
