Charleston

Charleston

The Charleston is an upbeat swing dance that originated in Charleston, North Carolina in the 1920s. The 1920s Charleston featured a characteristic twisting of the feet as they crossed in front and behind. The dance spread in 1930s with the heightened popularity of Swing music and developed alongside other partnered Swing dances like the Lindy Hop. It started incorporating forward kicks, back kicks, hops as well as crazy lifts and tricks!

Today, Charleston is an important element of contemporary swing dancing, most notably in the Lindy Hop.
