Social Dance Genres

Picture
At Dance 4 Life, our dances are organised into four main genres, each made up of closely related styles.

These groupings bring together dances that are connected through shared underlying concepts, while still having their own distinct movement, rhythm, and feel.

Each genre has 2 core dances that you'll start with, introducing additional dances as you progress.
Street Latin
Salsa & Bachata

Street Latin includes social and club dances that are popular worldwide.
The core dances are Salsa from Cuba and Bachata from the Dominican Republic.
These dances are beginner friendly with simple timing and structure, while still offering plenty of variation as you progress.
Brazilian Latin
Bolero & Forr
õ
Brazilian Latin dances originate from Brazil and are popular at Brazilian-themed dance events around the world.
Brazilian partner dancing is known for its musical variation and adaptable timings, which allow for a very playful social dance.
Brazilian Latin's core dances are the expressive Bolero and the upbeat Forró.
Ballroom Latin
Rumba & Cha Cha Cha

Ballroom Latin includes some of the most recognisable partner dances, popularised globally through ballroom culture, film, and television.
These dances are known for their strong character, rhythm, and expressive styling.
Ballroom Latin's core dances are the heartfelt Rumba and the cheeky Cha Cha Cha.
Social & Modern Ballroom
Box Waltz & Social Foxtrot

This genre groups dances come from traditional ballroom culture that are known for their smooth, travelling movements.
These dances glide around the floor with fluidity, elegance and grace.
You'll start with Social Ballroom, which include the Social Foxtrot and the classic Box Waltz

Expanding the Genres

As you progress through our dance levels, you'll be introduced to additional related dances in each genre.

Bronze expands into Merengue, introducing rhythm and hip action.

Silver explores musicality and connection through the smooth, grounded movement of Kizomba.
In Gold, Argentine Tango develops balance, posture and control, while Lindy Hop introduces the energetic world of swing.
Brazilian Latin
Samba de Gafieira, Zouk & Soltinho
Later stages of Brazilian introduce you to more dances deeply connected to Brazilian partner dance culture
In Bronze, you'll learn the smooth and joyous Samba de Gafieira and expand on traveling movement and flow around the floor
Silver explores the free and floating nature of Zouk, with a stronger focus on fluidity and connection
Soltinho is introduced in Gold as the Brazilian Swing dance, bringing an upbeat, adaptable party dance to the genre.
Ballroom Latin
Ballroom Samba, Jive & Paso Doble

Ballroom Latin later introduces others dances traditionally grouped with Rumba and Cha Cha.
